Position:  UMS Algebra Teacher job description

Purpose of the Position/Job Summary:

In addition to meeting the responsibilities of a Teacher, the UMS Algebra teacher partners with administration (Upper Middle School (UMS - 7th and 8th grades) Lead Teacher and Lower School Director) to facilitate the fulfillment of SLO Classical Academy’s mission as it relates to our math program..  

Employee Status:  Salaries, P/T, exempt status.  

Job Structure:

The structure of the UMS Algebra teacher job requires being on campus for certain hours Monday-Thursday and some outside of classroom hours, and attendance at some regularly scheduled meetings will be required.

Education and experience, in addition to those of a Teacher:

  • A related teaching credential and/or equivalent work experience is required (except under unique circumstances)
  • Education and/or 2 years of experience related to math, such as a degree in mathematics, teaching in another setting, math tutoring, math camps, etc.
  • The UMS Algebra teacher will demonstrate a growing understanding of classical education in terms of mathematics teaching and a proclivity to SLOCA’s unique educational model.
  • Ideally, familiarity with and ability to teach MS science with an eye to grow in this direction in the future (beginnings of physics, systems of living things, and microbiology)
  • The UMS Algebra Teacher must also demonstrate his or her ability to successfully fulfill the role and responsibilities in a timely manner.
  • Familiarity with classical education is desirable

 Primary Working Relationships within School Staff:

  • The UMS Algebra Teacher reports to the UMS Lead Teacher and the Lower School Director
  • The UMS Algebra Teacher collaborates with other math teachers across levels.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities of the UMS Algebra teacher  include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Responsibility for teaching middle school students math in a classical, integrated, effective, and engaging fashion.
  • Providing math support to our full-time students weekly.
  • Willingness to learn about Singapore Math and to build the bridge between skills learned previously and new algebra skills.
  • Dedication to and curiosity about the inclusion of the use of manipulatives, games, word problems, and other creative activities that inspire the love of learning
  • Attendance at math-related meetings (1 per month at this time).
  • Collaboration with the Lower School Director and Academic Dean to see classical education be pursued/integrated in math in a developmentally appropriate manner for UMS.
  • Collaboration with the UMS Lead Teacher, UMS Pre-Algebra Teacher,  and Lower School Director regarding curricular choices in the areas he or she leads.
