Position Overview
We are looking for an experienced Literacy Specialist who shares our Christian classical commitments and has a background in working with students who have learning disabilities. The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic and thoughtful educator capable of engaging grammar school students in meaningful Structured Literacy (Orton Gillingham) instruction in small groups as well as one-on-one settings. The candidate will use a Structured Literacy approach to address difficulties with reading, spelling, and writing. Additionally, the ideal candidate will assist upper school students in reading comprehension by teaching reading comprehension strategies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
-Works with students one-on-one and in small groups to provide early intervention and remediation for reading, spelling, and writing difficulties.
-Administers and interprets assessments to screen for potential learning disabilities, gather baseline data, and monitor progress.
-Collaborates with both teachers and parents to support students with the content of the phonics, spelling, liter ture, and writing curricula as needed.
-Provides feedback about student progress, recommendations about how to support students, and supplemental resources for at-home practice.
-Works closely with the director of Student Support Services to set up accommodation plans for students with language-based learning disabilities and to plan remediation for these students.
-Participates on the assessment team for new applicants in kindergarten.
-Coordinates support for families of incoming junior kindergarteners, kindergarteners, and first graders and works with some incoming students one-on-one to provide appropriate support as needed.

Requirements
-Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees
-Thorough knowledge of learning disabilities as well as experience working with students who have learning dis abilities like dyslexia and dysgraphia
-Training in and experience providing Structured Literacy (aka Orton-Gillingham) instruction
-Familiarity with the basics of early child development
-Demonstrates experiential wisdom and discretion in handling sensitive conversations
-Good interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
-Proven success in working collaboratively and communicating effectively with students, parents, and teachers
-Alignment with our school’s statement of faith and commitment to the school’s mission, vision, and values
